하우스홀드 굳즈Household Goods(2024)는 4명의 북한 이탈 청년들의 기억과 경험을 중심으로, 그들 삶의 단편들을 생활용품을 통해 탐구하는 영상작업이다. 작품에 등장하는 비누, 휴지, 라이터 등과 같은 일상적인 물건들은 우리가 공유하는 보편적인 문화적, 사회적 의미를 담고 있다. 그러나 이러한 평범한 물건들은 사람마다 각기 다른 특별한 기억과 감정을 불러일으키는데, 예를 들면 ‘비누’를 떠올리고자 하면 누군가는 군대에서 모두가 갖고 싶어 했던 오이 비누를, 다른 누군가에게는 부잣집에서 맡았던 향기로운 비누를 떠오른다. 이처럼 동일한 물건이 각 개인의 배경에 따라 서로 다른 의미와 감정을 불러일으키는 현상에 주목하며, 이번 영상작업에서는 북한 이탈 청년들의 일상 속 생활용품들이 지닌 기억의 조각들로 하여금 다시는 돌아갈 수 없는 고향, 가족에 대한 그리움을 기록한다.
Household Goods(2024) is a video work that explores the fragmented lives of four North Korean defector youth through the lens of everyday household items. The objects featured in the work, such as soap, tissues, and lighters, carry universal cultural and social meanings that we all share. However, these ordinary items evoke distinct memories and emotions for each individual. For example, when thinking of "soap," one person might recall the coveted cucumber-scented soap from their time in the military, while another might be reminded of the fragrant soap they encountered in a wealthy household. By focusing on how the same object can evoke different meanings and emotions depending on one’s background, this work not only records the experiences of these North Korean defectors but also captures the fragments of memory associated with everyday items. These fragments, in turn, reflect the longing for a homeland and family that can never be returned to.
